"And even if this proves to be true, it’s not the kind of “change” I’m going to be voting for. The version of the constitution I would support would limit the power of the federal government and put it where it belongs, namely in the hands of the states. That’s something I can get behind. It’s what the government was designed to be, and that’s what it was intended to do. And that’s a change for the better."
My Friends from The Past
The Courier is, by necessity, the midpoint in a discussion that begins and ends with the U.S. Constitution.
The historical record is fascinating but, over the years, my friends have evolved into characters from a novel. There are a few leaders, but they tend to be followers. The majority are dreamers who love the idea of a free and independent Kentucky, but they don’t seem to know how to make it happen.
They have made up their minds to live out their dreams, but they have many, many doubts and a lot of skepticism. They don’t have the courage of their convictions and they are unlikely to make a success of their efforts.
They don’t know the important people or the history of Kentucky and the United States and they haven’t made much effort to learn. Their goal, other than for themselves, is to create an alternative to the American system.
They are far away from the Appalachian Mountains and know nothing of the Kentucky of long ago, but they seem to carry a romantic vision of it. They are comfortable with their orthodoxy and they live out their liberalism in other people’s backyards.
And they love barbecue.
Last week, they held another of their annual rallies in Washington, D.C., and I was impressed by their numbers and the kinds of people who went to it. These were not professional activists. They were everyday people, hoping for a better life and starting with the premise that the government should be very limited. It is a legitimate aspiration for some of them, if not all. They give me hope because they are out there and they understand. 0b46394aab
